Our Story
In 2012, Maxterial experienced an unexpected scientific discovery.
The discovery was published in Langmuir, the flagship journal of American
Chemical Society (ACS) in 2014. Following publication in Langmuir, the Thiel Foundation
approached the founders and encouraged them to apply for funding to start a company.
Following a trip from Virginia to the San Francisco Bay area to meet with representatives from the Thiel Foundation, the co-founders decided to make the Bay area their home.
With additional encouragement from BASF, Maxterial, Inc. was founded in July 2015 in Richmond California, near the Rosie the Riveter site. The company’s current
manufacturing facility is in Brown City, MI.
